[Interview] Sarah Coponat
Ecletismo Musical (PT) — ecletismomusical — July 4, 2025

LEAD
In a world dominated by formulas and metrics, Sarah Coponat distinguishes herself through emotional sincerity and fearless artistic presence. Known for spontaneous piano improvisations streamed on Twitch, she has cultivated a globally devoted community. On the verge of releasing her album "We Are Incandescent", she discusses identity, vulnerability, and creative authenticity.

Q. Do you ever feel that by creating music you're actually trying to create yourself?
A. Sense of self inseparable from her musical output. Emotional honesty in every note. Songs are "tiny glass bottles, holding a piece of my soul."

Q. Is emotion in music something you control, or something you surrender to?
A. Emotion is her guide, providing direction and confidence.

Q. When you improvise live, do you feel more exposed or invisible?
A. Viewership metrics initially affected her, balance has grown over time. Livestreaming became her primary method for connecting with audiences meaningfully.

Q. What made you focus more on piano rather than vocals?
A. Deliberate choice to emphasize piano. New album incorporates vocals, piano, and kazoo (latter originally introduced humorously during a livestream).

Q. How has your community influenced your creative process?
A. Naturally shy ; community pushed her growth. Improvisation emerged from fears of repetitiveness, ultimately becoming her greatest strength.

Q. Is creating ephemeral improvised pieces a quiet rebellion or declaration of freedom?
A. Appreciates the poetic nature of impermanence ; meaningful melodies naturally resurface — like "matter changing shapes".

Q. What limits your mainstream concert reach?
A. Uncertain about industry dynamics ; intends to perform more shows and explore film and video game composition.

Q. Ideal festival?
A. Piano festival featuring improvisators and composers : Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Oscar Peterson, Chopin, Nina Simone.

Q. Five greatest albums of all time?
1. Rachmaninoff — Second Piano Concerto
2. Pink Floyd — The Wall
3. Paul McCartney and Wings
4. Radiohead — Pyramid Song
5. Liszt — Mephisto Waltz
(Also mentions Alan Parsons Project, Enya, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.)

Q. Plans for the next months?
A. Upcoming Paris show: October 4 at La Salle Cortot. Hopes to visit Portugal.
