All right, all right guys, so we're back with Sarah Cappana. She's a composer, a singer, a pianist, a vocalist, a friend of the stream, and she is here with us in person. So excited to have her chat. I know you guys are excited. Give it up for Sarah. Hey, everyone. Hello. So we're not only excited to have you on the stream, but we're excited to have you in New York because this is one of your first times here. What does it feel like to be here? Oh, it's sort of sports. I've been biking all day. A lot of exercise. A lot of exercise. A lot of beef jerky. Of all things. Is there something that you're most excited to do while here? Oh, coming here is so exciting. Yeah. Yeah. Good. It's really amazing. Good. Good, good, good. I love that. I know that you came from the classical world, and it's very different from Twitch. It's very rigid. It's very rigid, but Twitch allows for that freedom for you to create as freely as you'd like to create. It allows for you to make mistakes. It allows for you to literally see and hear from your live audience. Can you kind of talk about that transition and how it's helped your artistry? Actually, it was a real journey. I had to learn and to unlearn things. I had to totally change my vision of performance, the relationship to the audience, what you should expect from a performance. Because in the classical world, as you said, it's very rigid. There is no room for experimentation or mistake or weird things, weird style, new things. On Twitch, you can literally do anything you want. You're totally free. At the beginning, I was playing my originals that I had composed. In a classical way, people would say, "Oh, can you play this track from your first album? Can you play that?" And I would play, and I would think, "Okay, what am I going to play next?" You were in your head. And then I figured I had to find a way to be able to play nonstop and always have new content, always try new things. So how could I do that? I had to improvise live or compose live. It was the only way. So I started composing live. That's what I used to do in my cave. I did it in front of an audience on Twitch, and it worked out. It was very out of the comfort zone, but it became my day-to-day routine now. Yeah, that's awesome. I imagine you probably are inspired a lot of the times from things that might be said in the chat, possibly. How does the chat assist you in composing while you're in the process of that and you're looking through what people are saying? How do they inspire you as you go through that process? They give me energy, a lot of energy. It's like you can feel in a concert. Usually you hear the audience clapping at the very end, especially in a classical concert. Maybe in a BTS concert they will scream the whole way, but now you can hear them while you're performing. So you know you're in a cool moment, you're feeling it, and you see everyone that's feeling it with you. They're like, "Oh, now I saw her. She's doing it. I like it." So it just gives you more and more confidence and more energy to keep going and keep pushing further. So a lot of energy. Can you tell us about a time where you've maybe like, in your mind, you know you may have messed up, maybe the chat didn't know, but it really helped push your craft or your creativity. Actually, I started experimenting with heavy bass on piano. I was very scared of doing that live. I had no idea how to do it. And I started hammering the bass part of the piano in some songs. And everyone was saying, "Oh, I love that. I love this bass. I love this bass." And I had no idea if they would like it or hate it. So I was like, "Okay, I will keep on going. I will keep on trying." And now it has become one of the things that I do. So yeah, definitely. I love that. That you kind of get a deeper insight into what your fans are interested in. Totally. Also, what's amazing is that they notice everything. So they have a way of listening that's very intense. So they notice when you do something different, when you change something, and they enjoy it. And it's so very nice to see that. Because they understand what's happening. It's amazing. They are following the musical journey. As a creator, I'm kind of curious about just how you're able to use a lot of what they're saying to make your next thing. Or your next show. Maybe there are things that people are saying in the chat one day that you later on use in the next week. How are you building your shows each day? Or are you kind of just going into them and being like, "I'm just going to experiment. I have no plan. I'm just going to figure it out as I go." I usually have no plan. I usually have no plan. And it's more linked to my emotional state of the moment. Or like energy of the moment. But it can shift very fast. Sometimes I feel like I'm tired, I'm starting a stream, and I'm playing soft things. And suddenly, I don't know, there's a great energy in the stream. And it changes the course of the stream. That's so interesting. Does that not make you nervous to not have any sort of plan? Well, it used to. It used to be so, so stressful. But no, no. It's like how I do it, no plan. So I'm more scared when I need to make a plan. Wow. So there's like a freedom in not having a plan. Exactly, exactly. Interesting. Interesting. Chat, drop your questions. I think I'm missing some questions. I'm trying to like peek over to your questions as we're chatting. But talk to me a little bit about like the evolution of your stream. Because I know that when you first started, your stream blew up pretty quickly. After just a few days, people really like found it and was obsessed. And you really started picking up very, very quickly. How has your stream just evolved over time? Actually, we started streaming on Reddit. And the first people we had on Twitch came from Reddit, and they didn't even have a Twitch account. They signed up. They're like, what is Twitch? So it was not the usual way to start on Twitch. But yes, people were at the very beginning, very interested and very into it, and showing up at each stream. And I was extremely nervous in the first streams. So I was very happy to see family or faces coming back. And then we had more and more people. Just the center of my followers on Twitch were always so kind and so supportive. And we really built a bubble of a very beautiful place with confidence. Or you can try everything. So they always helped keeping this place perfect. If someone is weird or saying something mean, they would feel the chat with love and respect. And so it kept a wonderful vibe as we grew. And it never changed. I love that. It's just like an organic community, it sounds like. You know, it's so interesting. I love that you kind of mentioned not having a plan, because a lot of people, I think a lot of streamers or just people in general, worry about how am I going to make my content unique every single day? Yeah, this is the main problem. Right, exactly. Is that part of the reason why you just kind of just go with the wind or not really? Sometimes I try to like say, oh, today we're going to do like soft piano, for example, or more epic piano so people can know what they're about to fall into. But it's a starting point. Yeah, a bit. But usually, no, I don't. And yeah, there's a freedom in that. And it used to be a big problem. I used to be so scared of getting boring. Right, exactly. Right. And so I was like, I'm not going to play this track like 100 times in a week. Like, it's not possible. So doing that, yeah, just like totally erased that issue. Yeah. And now, yeah, I don't worry about that anymore. But sometimes I still worry about that. But it's not like in the style, I will, for example, bring a new instrument. You know, yeah, this is a way to evolve, even as a musician, right, like evolve and bring new stuff. And so you can play different styles. So I just add to your catalog. Do you ever take requests as far as like instruments, like if people are like, can you bring a tambourine or something? Well, no, I don't. Don't ask. But for my birthday on the 25th, I received the kazoo. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, people are asking about the kazoo in the chat right now. I know, like it's become one of the main things I do now. It's like, that's why it's so incredible. There's a spontaneity, you know, like, I didn't know what a kazoo was. Yeah, I didn't know. I just had seen it in a picture, you know, as a meme. Right. And, and so someone from the chat, the doc came and sent me a kazoo for my birthday. And I was like, Oh, how do I play this thing? You know, like, I turned it around, like, how does the sound come out of it? And then we, we created like a wonderful sound with it, with the help of my brother who works behind the scene with the audio engineering, you know. And we were like, wow, well, well, actually, it's going to be like a very important part of my streams now, you know. So now it's like kazoo streams. And it's just because, you know, someone sent me a kazoo, right? Yeah, it's incredible. Listen, if you want her to use a particular instrument on my birthday, though, not every day. Okay. It has to be a special occasion. Yeah, no, but yeah, it's I received also a flute, a flute, like what do you call that? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But like that, you know, you use like this. Oh, what is that called? A slide whistle. Yeah, a slide whistle. Yeah, exactly. That's very more complicated to make this sound great. Will we hear some of that at some point on your stream? If Seb can figure out a way to make it sounds great. Okay. But I don't think I can do it on my own. That's funny. So Big Lebowski is asking me to ask you about whistling. Oh, yeah, whistling. I'm very great at whistling, right? No, I'm very bad at whistling. So no chance for that. No chance, but maybe as an extra sound with like a lot of free verb hidden in the background, it can add texture or like depth. Yeah, yeah, interesting. See, the chat is always super helpful. So I know that streamers tend to share a lot about themselves while on stream, but is there anything that you do off stream maybe to prepare for your streams? Or do you just do as an artist that we wouldn't know about but is kind of cool? What do I do outside of the streams? That's kind of cool. And nobody knows about it. Oh, nice question. Well, I, I dance. Yeah, that's a great thing. I do dancing. Well, I had an injury a few months ago, so I had to stop but I do I used to do a lot of dancing. And at the moment, I'm hitting the gym with my brother. I love that staying in shape. So you know, my magic is a secret things would be burpees and sit ups. Very cool, right? I do feel like when you play, though, you do use a lot of your body and it almost feels like piano sports. Yeah, it feels like a dance like number almost while you're on the piano. Is that intentional? And also, like, when I watch you, I oftentimes think like I wonder what she's thinking in the moment, like you just get in the zone. But like, what does the zone feel like for Sarah? Oh, well, I would say it's like, you know, when you just become emotion, you know, it's like, I'm not thinking of something in particular, but I'm having a lot of different thoughts and emotions and like, even smells, or it's just like being, you know, in a universe like and it just keeps evolving. I don't really know I couldn't tell, you know, with words, oh, it's cold right now. And you know, like, because like, two seconds later, then it's full summer, you know, so it's just like, about feeling, you know, yeah, yeah, just about feeling. But as I said, like, dancing, like, it's for sure I love to dance. And so, to me, music is a part of dances music, right? Like, it's so with the piano, sometimes, you know, it feels like they're intertwined. Yeah, it's intertwined. Yeah. So Max Martinez is in the chat saying, oh, a few things. He said, what kind of dance? And then he also said, zumbano. And he also said, would she ever consider writing a musical? Oh, I, so not Zumba, but I love Zumba. But I used to do ballet and contemporary dance, jazz, modern jazz, you know, all these things. It was my dream during my whole childhood to be a musical actress. Ah, I can see that for you. Really? Totally. You could see that for you. Are you serious? Bulldozer says we're all waiting for a vocal album. Oh, yeah. We are working on it. Okay. Okay. It's the next big project. We're working on this and another album more with like cinematic music that will sum up a bit what we've done recently with the casu, for example, the synth and everything. Love that. How much practicing, I guess, goes into putting this all together on a daily basis for your audience here on Twitch? Well, there's a lot of preparation on the technical side, which does not involve me all the time. Yeah. I see my brother, but me sometimes for sound checks and everything. But it's more like a continuing thing, you know, like one day you won't have to check anything sometimes to take 10 hours, you know? Wow. But for the piano part, I don't really practice, you know, anymore. Because I play so much that if I play even more, I could hurt myself, you know, like I used to play more and it would just hurt my wrists. So I use the streams actually and what I will play as exercises sometimes. Interesting. Yeah. I've always done that, for example, like I will play around the difficulty and make it into a song, you know? And like play around it so it becomes natural. Right. And so I try to keep doing that. If I see that I am, you know, having a hard time with something, I will just stay stuck on it. Try to make it sound melodious, of course, you know? But try to stay stuck on it. Yeah. Tell us a little bit more about your composing process. Like where do you begin and how do you know when something is complete? Oh, yeah, that's a great question. This is a very tough thing, right? When do you know when something is complete? Sometimes I don't know when it's a struggle and I'm like, oh, it could be better. Is it over? I don't know. It needs a new part. It doesn't need. Does it need something, you know? So maybe sometimes you can need outside help, I guess, for that. Sometimes it's just obvious. So there are very, very different experiences. Like sometimes I will write something very fast, record it instantly. It's over. It's done. Wow. And usually it's like the best ones. Sometimes you don't overthink it. Yeah. When you succeed in catching the moment of grace, you know, like you had, you were recording at that time, you know, you did it, you know? And sometimes it takes a lot of work and post editing also. In my latest album, at last, for example, there is a track called The Last Dynasty. I spent like one week composing it, like, I don't know, more than 10 hours a day, you know, so it was a difficult one. Yeah. And I was trying, actually for this one, I was trying to change my ways a little bit, you know? I was forcing myself into playing in a style that was a bit different from what I was usually doing and more like sounding a bit more, for example, like a new D or something tomorrow, this kind of artist, like I was trying to, you know, just get a little bit inspired in this area. And so it was difficult because I was always coming back to my, I felt like it was lacking something, you know? Yeah. Because, yeah. And so at the end, I cancelled, I erased everything and just played it, you know, naturally, and it worked. But I think the work I did in trying to, you know, have a more like modern cinematic style helped me also pianistically, right, musically, even if I didn't use it perfectly in this song. And sometimes we just take extracts from the streams, we record live and, you know, yeah. Yeah. So it depends. Very, very cool. I know that you started out with covers, and then you kind of transitioned to originals. How did you know that it was time to like transition into that? And do you have a favorite in each category, I guess, when it comes to covers, when it comes to your original pieces that you just absolutely love playing? Actually, I've been playing covers very recently, like when I started streaming, because I thought I needed to play songs people would recognize. But it was the first for me. I had never done it. And I loved it, actually, I love, I don't like to like play requests, you know, in the streams and do covers all the time. But sometimes they are great, great songs, you know, and they fit, you know, with my piano style. And like, it's amazing to play around it. For example, Skywalker, like Star Wars, No Time to Die was great also for piano. And it's not a thing I do, like, I just have a few covers here, I'm there. Yeah, but I was always composing original since I was a kid. So it's not something I so I found a piece of paper a few months ago with certain Hey, I'm Sarah, I'm, I'm eight years old or something. I just wrote a new song today. Sweet. Oh my god, I love that. Do you remember what the song was? No. It's a good thing I don't, I think. You got to start somewhere. Yeah, yeah. I mean, I have a lot of papers with weird songs written. Yeah, that is so sweet. I love that so much. Just going back, I guess, backwards in time, could you have ever imagined that you'd have this like platform to be able to share your music and your love for music with other people. No, it's, it's like, the most wonderful thing that Twitch is so wonderful. And having so many people listening to my music on Twitch, you know, and being so active, you know, like, is just a dream. Yeah, yeah, I used to play, you know, I played, I come from classical and I used to play neoclassical now I'm doing more cinematic style that's could fit for movies or such so it's not very neoclassical, but at the beginning was very, very, very neoclassical. And for the classical world, it was pop, they were telling me, oh no, it's not neoclassical, it's pop. It was not pop, you know, and if I would meet with producers, they would be like, oh, this is classical, you know, so I would feel now we're interesting. Yeah, did you feel like you couldn't fit? Yeah, yeah, I had no books for me like in this world and music musically, you know, I was very, very, it was my main like issue, right? I was very scared about that. And so I thought, well, if the classical world doesn't want me and I'm not pop enough right now, right? Well, I will just do my thing and try, you know, and see where you land. Yeah. And I had the chance to have my brother working with me. And so he's the one who figured out how to stream on Twitch and everything. Yeah. And so we went there with no real expectations. And so many people just connected, you know, with the music instantly. And like, it was what I had been waiting for my life, right? To be able to show my music to people, connect with people in a simple way, right? And so, yeah, Twitch is an amazing platform. It's amazing. I love that. Drag of Nier says, question for Sarah, does she ever get bored of playing piano almost every day? Sometimes, you know, it's like for everyone, sometimes you're bored to wake up, you know, but it's usually, you know, I'm, I kind of like, you know, like, for example, I haven't touched a piano in a week right now, because I've been in New York. Yeah. And I miss it so much. I miss it. Yeah, I miss it so much. It's like, you know, it's a part of me, right? It's like when you miss your person or something. Yeah. And I miss it. So no, it's it's a bit of it's a part of my it's how I live my life, right? So it's I don't get bored of it or tired of it because I never force myself. I need it. It just comes naturally. Yeah. Well, sometimes, of course, like, I'm like, Oh, I don't want to play today because I don't want to work today. But it's not true, right? It's just like laziness that we can all face. But I don't get bored. Yeah. And if I do get a little bit bored of like, a musical style that I mean, at the moment, well, I will just switch, you know, add another instrument and change, you know, try to change, like, leave the piano for a while, go on the scenes, sing, you know, add a new thing. Yeah, that's so fascinating. So I know that you mentioned how, like, on your streams, a lot of the times it's the direction you go in is based on the way you're feeling emotionally. Do you feel like you make the best music when you're like super sad or like, what's the emotional state that just gets the fire sounds going? Yeah, it depends on what kind of music if it's for vocal song, definitely being very sad helps. Usually when I'm very sad, I will write a good song, I go on the piano, you know, and I keep authentic and it's it works. And but for piano, I don't need to be sad, actually, at all. It's very more for vocals, like, well, I will get my because I feel like maybe it's a moment where you connect with yourself a little bit more, right? Like you, you can think about what you're going through when you're sad, right? You usually think more about what's happening in your life than when you're just happy and going with the flow. Right. But you can also need to express yourself when you're so happy and have so much energy. And this I do with the piano, right? I will be more rhythmic. And so with the piano, yeah, I don't I actually I never do sometimes I'm like, tired, and I feel like I will do nothing good. And suddenly, I'm super inspired, you know, and sometimes I'm like, Oh, today, I'm going to be super inspired. And no, I'm not inspired. So you know, I don't know. That's hilarious. Someone big Lebowski saying maybe she can play something now spontaneously. We'll have her do that in just a second. Lots of people in the chat commenting. It's also worth mentioning that she plays on three pianos and special bass equipment with her feet. So talented. Crazy to think about like, truly, truly like even the kazoo thing, the fact that you just got a kazoo and like you're killing it on it and like creating these really incredible sounds and just an experience with your music. Do you ever think about that? Like, do you ever think about the experience you're creating for your audience? Sometimes I, well, usually I'm in the moment, you know, so I'm playing and I don't really think about everything. But sometimes, some people would say, I don't know, like, Oh, you made my day better, you know, or, oh, I really needed this today, or this music, you know, made me think of my, I don't know, my my lover of what or whatever. And, and it makes me realize, you know, that it's a beautiful impact. Right. And also the fact that those people come back in each stream. It's incredible. Like they have become a part of my life, but I'm a part of their life for sure. And it's, it's wonderful. Yeah. And the instruments you plan on, or you would love to like incorporate that maybe like scare you a little bit, but like, maybe at some point you'll experiment with it. Yeah, I want a guitar, you know, do you know, I want that because I want to be, you know, like, like they do with the guitar. I want to do that, you know, you want that guitar energy, the guitar here, I would love to be able to play electric guitar, like distortion and everything, you know, like, this is something I would love to be able to play. But I don't play guitar. And like the last time I tried, you know, I heard my fingers. I was like, Oh, no, no, it's too, it's too, you know, I can't do it. It's too painful. So, but yeah, I would love to find a way to have something where I can stand up, you know. Yeah. Yeah. And the guitar is so cool. Maybe next thing is the guitar. Yeah. Or maybe it's a weird instrument like the, you know, I don't know. I like, I like the way you're thinking. Yeah. Very interesting.
